Greg Lynn designed the new fountain in the Hammer Museum courtyard — I found myself confronted by it this morning when I arrived for work. Woah.
It’s still in the process of being installed, and for the time being water seems to be spraying all over. It resembles a kind of giant blanched vertabrae, however upon closer inspection, one starts to notice the materials are somehow familiar: injection-molded rockers, kickboards…?
According to museum literature, the piece is made entirely out of children’s toys. Interesting and amusing to me, coming from Mr. Blobitechture. (It appears from his website that this is going to be a thing — they are taking up a [highly curated] used toy collection. At least they are recycling.)
It’s not clear how long it will be up, though it sounds like it may just be for the summer.
