Lake Tahoe, CA

A belated addition to the last entry on Lake Tahoe: following the nature morte elegance of the departed elite at Tallac, we encounter the grotesque mid-century indulgence of developers in the Tahoe Keys. Dead nature indeed. Here the lake’s only inlet — the Truckee River, and much of its marshland — was dredged and remolded into a hash of mini-penninsulas, covered with the boxes below. (SUV owners with “Keep Tahoe Blue” bumper stickers might consider loading up with dirt, native plants, and sledgehammers, and restoring the lake’s filtration system to its natural state.)

Agh, there’s something about repetition that makes conformity more interesting. Anyway, you at least have to hand it to the Homeowner’s Association for being organized. Excepting this amazing creature, who seems to have made it through a loophole:

They did set aside a patch of wetlands to the west. I guess this is what it all looked like sixty years ago?
